UWCD Minister Maneka Gandhi seeks blocking of dowry calculator website

Maneka Gandhi seeks blocking of dowry calculator website. Union Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi has asked Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad to block a website which claims to calculate the dowry amount for grooms and take action against its developers.

Ms. Gandhi on Thursday wrote a letter in this regard to her cabinet colleague Mr. Prasad, saying the website should be blocked as it promotes seeking dowry by men.

She said that it has been brought to her notice that there is a website www.dowrycalculator.com that suggests a dowry amount a potential groom can expect to get after considering parameters like his caste, qualification, profession, income etc.

Ms. Gandhi said in her letter this was not only shameful but also illegal as it promoted dowry.

“I request you to have this site blocked immediately and initiate action against the owners/developers of the website and the agency which is hosting this website,” the Minister said.

She further mentioned that she has asked the Secretary in the ministry of WCD to initiate proceedings under the Dowry Prohibition Act in this matter. The practice of dowry is a punishable offence in India.

The website, which have been seen by some on social media networks as a satirical take on the practice of dowry, says it is “dedicated to all the matchmaking aunties of India.”

The minister said she had also put in a request with the Secretary, WCD, to initiate proceedings under the Dowry Prohibition Act in this matter.

Dowry is a punishable offence in India under The Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961.

So, what is Dowry Calculator website all about?

A description on the Dowry Calculator website’s landing page says it is “dedicated to all the match making aunties of India”. The single-page website greets the visitors with a pro forma asking them to fill out categories like, age, caste, profession, monthly income, skin colour etc of the prospective groom.

Once all the details are submitted, the website calculates the amount of dowry the potential groom can expect to receive. The amount is then displayed with a message, satirical in nature, suggesting the prospective groom to better his social standing or congratulating him for his “achievements”.

Random details furnished by The Statesman threw up different results. One of them read like this: “Not horrible, but that is hardly a consolation. Your social standing leaves a lot to be desired for. Your dowry rate is currently 15 Lakh. As they say, better late than never. If you want your social standing to improve, you might want to delay your marriage a wee bit and work on those variables of life you have control over.”

Mecca Masjid blast: Owaisi hits out as NIA advised not to appeal Aseemanand acquittal

Mecca Masjid Blast case. According to media reports, the NIA reportedly found it tough to appeal the case as it could not prove any of its allegations with concrete evidence.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has reportedly decided not to appeal the acquittal of the five accused in the 2008 Mecca Masjid blast case, including main accused Swami Aseemanand.

Nine people were killed and 58 were injured in the blasts, which took place as thousands had gathered for their Friday prayers.

Mecca Masjid Blast case

According to media reports, the NIA reportedly found it tough to appeal the case as it could not prove any of its allegations with concrete evidence. Following this, it received legal advice that suggested against challenging the acquittal.

On May 18, 2007, members belonging to the Hindu militant outfit Abhinav Bharat had allegedly placed two bombs in Mecca Masjid, considered to be one of the holiest Muslim sites in the city.
They allegedly placed the bombs in the 17th century monument during Friday prayers, when thousands of people had gathered.

According to media reports, the investigation agency listed 226 prosecution witnesses, of which 64 turned hostile, including Lieutenant Colonel Shrikanth Purohit, who was an accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case.

Responding to the latest development, AIMIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi dubbed it a ‘political decision’.

“The NIA didn’t pursue it in an honest way. They pursued it in a way that Aseemanand should be acquitted by the court. This is a political decision taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Owaisi said.

Jail and bail to Assemanand

Jatin Chatterjee aka Aseemanand is one of the prime accused in the case and was arrested by the CBI in 2010.

Earlier associated with the RSS, he is considered an ideologue of Abhinav Bharat, an extremist organisation allegedly involved in the Malegaon and Ajmer blasts.

In the last week of March, the Fourth Metropolitan Sessions court in Hyderabad granted him conditional bail and directed him to furnish two sureties of Rs 50,000 each and to not leave the city without prior permission.

In April this year, Owaisi led a delegation and met with Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Governor ESL Narasimhan to submit a memorandum seeking the re-trial of the accused in the Mecca Masjid bomb blast case.

The delegation comprised of 20 people including Owaisi and others like Charminar MLA Syed Ahmed Pasha Qadri and top officials of the Majlis-e-Ulema-e-Deccan, United Muslim Forum, Jamaat-e-Islami and Jamaat-ul-Ulema among other such groups.

Speaking to reporters at the time, Owaisi said that great injustice had occurred, as many innocent Muslim youth had been tortured after the terror attack took place.

“We appealed to the Governor to ask the Centre for a retrial so that justice can be done. We hope that the accused will be punished,” he said.

Jeep Compass Caught Testing In India Launch In Mid-2017
Jeep Compass Caught Testing In India Launch In Mid-2017

Jeep Compass Caught Testing In India Launch In Mid-2017.The jeep brand finally launched in India this year and we couldn’t be happier. It’s taken a long time to enter the market and when it did the prices at which the cars were launched were, to put it in simple terms, unexpected.

But it was at the launch itself that the company promised that it would be bringing a made-in-India SUV by mid-2017. From the looks of it though, the company has already started testing the car and we can’t wait to hear the launch announcement soon.

The all-new jeep compass will be locally manufactured at FCA’s Ranjangaon facility near Pune and this is big news for India. For those who were a bit disappointed with the price tag the other Jeep SUVs came with, the Compass might just renew their hopes.

Launch In Mid-2017

The all-new model replaces the outgoing Compass and Patriot SUVs completely and is an extremely important product for India. We say this time and again, because this will be the first car that FCA will make for export markets as well in India.

The 2017 Jeep Compass is positioned between the entry-level Renegade and Cherokee SUV in the automaker’s line-up, and is based on the stretched version of the Small Wide 4×4 architecture. In terms of design, the new Compass replicates the design language of the Grand Cherokee. The square wheel arches, the muscular looks and the tail lamps, all bring the design element together and we love how it looks.

However, the new Jeep C-SUV India launch will take place by mid-2017 or later. The upcoming SUV will enter production at FCA’s $280 million Ranjangaon plant in Maharashtra next year. Testing of the upcoming Jeep SUV is already underway in India. A handful of spy shots of the Jeep Compass test mules has surfaced online.
