Speaking with media persons, M K Gunasekhar, chairperson, standing committee on tax and finance, said that two meetings were held with Wipro staffs on the arrears of property tax. “Wipro Limited was supposed to pay Rs 21 crore towards property tax. There was a dispute between the BBMP and the Wipro on the amount. Later, the Wipro Limited has agreed to pay Rs 19 crore. Today, Raghunandan, vice president, Wipro Limited has handed over a cheque for Rs 19 crore,’’ Gunasekhar said.

The chairperson of standing committee on tax and finance has also said that he had received complaints from the public about the non-cooperation of some banks while accepting the property tax. “I had convened a meeting with the staffs of Canara Bank, Axis Bank, Central Bank and HDFC Bank. There were more complaints against Canara Bank staffs. I advised them to cooperate with the public while accepting the property tax. I also warned them to withdraw deposits from these banks if the employees of such banks continue to harass public while remitting the property tax,’’ Gunasekhar said.

Station Survey in 15 days

Gunasekhar said the BBMP has made arrangements to conduct station survey at malls, industrial estates and tech parks to detect property tax evasion. “The BMBP has already issued notices to Bagmane Tech Park and others. It has decided to conduct station survey at 70 tech parks, 50 malls and more than 500 industrial estates. The station survey will detect the property evasion by big malls and industrial estates,’’ he said.

He said the BBMP had collected Rs 1800 crore property tax till date and it is Rs 180 crore more than the property tax collected during the last year.
