Telangana state became the first State in the country where E Vahan Bima electronic motor insurance policies were legally accepted by police and transport departments.

Electronic Motor Insurance policies (e-Vahan Bima): Driving a motor vehicle without insurance in a public place is a punishable offence under Motor Vehicle Act 1988 and Third Party Insurance is a statutory requirement. Motor insurance gives protection to the vehicle owner against damage to his/her vehicle and pays for legal liability in case of any injury or damage to any Third party life or property caused by the use of vehicle in a public place.
Issuance of electronic Motor policies can be seen in the light of compliance with the law, cost efficiency, faster delivery of insurance policies and arresting fraud.
As a part of digital initiative, all the motor insurance policies, especially in the State of Telangana will be issued in electronic form with a quick response (QR) code for ease of the citizens as well as for verification by the enforcement agencies.
TS E Vahan Bima is a digitally signed insurance contract issued in an electronic form by an Insurer either directly to the policyholder or through the platform of registered Insurance repository. E Vahan Bima was introduced and implemented with effective from 02.01.2016 in Telangana State.
The E Vahan Bima policy will be issued in digital form with Quick Response (QR) code to scan for verification of policy details. An SMS based verification was also installed. There is no extra cost involved for TS E Vahan Bima/ electronic motor insurance policy.
“The launch of e-Vahan Bima and digital acceptance will help the poor accident victims in the state and also ensure better compliance,’’ KTR added.
So, now the registration certificates of vehicles and driving licenses will be verified electronically in the future. The initiative was a joint effort by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) of India, Department of Information Technology and the police and transport departments of the state.
