While the infant mortality rate in the US had declined, the rate of infant deaths within the first 24 hours after birth remained constant. As an obstetric anesthesiologist, Apgar was able to identify physical characteristics that could distinguish healthy newborns from those in trouble.

Apgar’s observations led to the development in 1952 of the Apgar score, a quick and convenient method for immediately evaluating how well the newborn weathered the birthing process, especially the effects of obstetric anesthesia.

To honor Apgar’s contribution to neonatology — the medical care of newborn infants — Google dedicated its Doodle Thursday to the doctor on her 109th birthday.

Generally conducted one and five minutes after birth, the test assigns a score of zero to two for each of five criteria: appearance, pulse, grimace, activity and respiration (APGAR). Scores of seven and higher are generally normal, four to six fairly low, and three and lower are generally regarded as critically low. The test helps medical personnel determine whether a newborn needs immediate medical care.

The test spread through US hospitals in the 1960s, proving a useful measurement for quickly assessing a newborn’s physical condition. The technique is still used in hospitals throughout the US.

Apgar graduated fourth in class at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1933, and in 1949 became the first woman named a full professor at the school.

In 1959, she embarked on a second career, earning a master’s degree in Public Health from Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health. Armed with her new degree, she went to work at the March of Dimes Foundation, directing research to prevent and treat birth defects.

She also published more than 60 scientific articles and several essays for newspapers and magazines during her career. Her 1972 book Is My Baby All Right? explains the causes and treatment of common birth defects and proposes precautions to help improve the chances of having a healthy baby.

Nominees And Winners 90th Academy Awards

Nominees And Winners 90th Academy Awards This evening, Hollywood’s awards season hits its apex, as the 90th annual Academy Awards ceremony airs. From the moment the nominations were announced in January, this year’s awards were poised to be a battle: Guillermo del Toro’s fantasy The Shape of Water led the pack with 13 nominations, while Christopher Nolan’s wartime epic Dunkirk came in with eight. Right behind with seven nominations was Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, anchored by Frances McDormand’s standout (and Oscar-nominated) performance, while Paul Thomas Anderson’s Phantom Thread and the Gary Oldman vehicle Darkest Hour came in tied with six nominations each.

Oscar 2018

But outside the big-name nominees, this year’s field also offered up the opportunity for some truly transformative Oscar moments. Greta Gerwig’s Best Director nomination puts her in the running to be only the second female director to win the award in Oscar history, while a win for Mudbound cinematographer Rachel Morrison would make her the first woman in history to win the category.

We’ll be tracking all the night’s winners, so keep it locked right here until the final moments of the 90th Academy Awards.

Google cofounder Sergey Brin and 23andMe founder Anne Wojcicki have gotten divorced after eight years of marriage. They married in 2007 and have two children together.

The divorce was quietly approved in May by a court in Santa Clara County.

In 2013, the pair separated and then Brin had a relationship with another woman at Google who worked in the Glass division, Recode’s Liz Gannes and Kara Swisher reported at the time. Brin’s affair, which was with a woman named Amanda Rosenberg, reportedly blindsided Wojcicki. Rosenberg had also been romantically tied to another powerful Googler at the time, Hugo Barra.

Rosenberg and Brin are no longer romantically linked, a source familiar with the couple tells Business Insider. Both Wojcicki and Brin have gone on to date other people since their separation, but they live close by each other in Los Altos and continue to raise their children as a team, the source said.

Brin is currently dating Nicole Shanahan, the founder of patent technology company ClearAccessIP; the pair attended a Jamaica wedding together in June.

Wojcicki and Brin had a prenuptial agreement in place, so their divorce shouldn’t impact Google very much. The pair reached a settlement for an undisclosed amount of money. Brin is worth an estimated $30 billion.

A spokesman for Brin declined to comment, as did a spokesman for Wojcicki.

Wojcicki, who is also a successful tech executive, has raised more than $110 million for her human genome startup, 23andMe; Google is one of the company’s investors. Susan Wojcicki, Anne’s sister, was one of Google’s earliest employees and is currently the head of Google’s YouTube business.

Pyramid discovered on Mars – WATCH How Could This Be?

shape of Pyramid was found on Mars

Pyramid discovered on Mars: A perfectly shaped pyramid was found on the red planet, Mars. It was captured by the Mars rover, Curiosity which was sent by NASA to Mars to further investigate the planet.

The photo revealed that the size of the pyramid was just about the size of a car which led to the conclusion that something bigger was buried deep down the surface of the planet.

The pyramid could also be a marker stone that is used to guide the travelers in deserted islands. It further opened up theories about having other intelligent aliens that have lived in a civilization.

According to the Paranormal Crucible, the perfect shape of the pyramid is a result of an intelligent design and it is certainly not a result of shadow and light tricks.

The pyramid found on Mars is one of the topics that will gain arguments. It will be one of the evidence that aliens do exist. Although it was not proven yet, there is a high possibility that other living creatures are in this universe.
